about

Hey Blk Child is a vividly interwoven voice and synth composition imagined by electronic music producer Blackdaylight and ArinMaya. The song takes form around the prolific poem Hey Black Child, written in 1965 by Useni Eugene Perkins, thus carrying on and furthering the tradition of powerful black art coming from Chicago by three Chicago-born artists. Through her transcendent yet accessible rendition, ArinMaya hopes to remind black and brown children of all ages, as well as everyone in back-to-school mode that they can “be what [they] want to be if [they] learn what [they] can learn.”

More about "Hey Black Child"

Hey Black Child was originally a song that was adapted into a poem, written by Chicago-based and -born writer Useni Eugene Perkins (NOT Countee Cullen) for his play "The Black Fairy." It was performed at the Lamont Zeno Theater at the Better Boys Foundation on Chicago's South Side for over 5,000 children and adults in Chicago, and then in Detroit, from 1974 to 1975. And much gratitude to Useni Eugene Perkins for his inspiring work.

The release of Hey Blk Child on September 13th, 2019 coincides with Useni's 87th birthday! Join the celebration by sharing the poem, song or book and spreading this powerful message with your loved ones!
